Frequently Asked Questions
About IPOs, GMP, and using IPOPlus
Getting Started
What is an IPO?
An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is the process through which a private
company offers its shares to the public for the first time, becoming a
publicly listed company on a stock exchange like the BSE or NSE.
What's the difference between a Mainboard IPO and an SME IPO?
Mainboard IPOs are for larger companies and list on the main BSE/NSE
platforms. SME IPOs are for smaller companies and list on the BSE SME or NSE
Emerge platforms, which have lower eligibility thresholds but also lower
minimum investment amounts than typical Mainboard IPOs, though lot sizes are
often larger in absolute share count.
What is a price band?
The price band is the range within which investors can bid for shares in the
IPO (e.g. ₹178-187). The final issue price is fixed within or at the top of
this band based on investor demand during the bidding process.
What is lot size?
The lot size is the minimum number of shares you must bid for in one
application. You can bid for multiples of the lot size, but not for a
fractional lot.
GMP & Subscription
What is GMP (Grey Market Premium)?
GMP is the premium at which IPO shares are informally traded in the
unofficial "grey market" before listing. It's often used as an unofficial
indicator of expected listing demand, but the grey market is unregulated,
so GMP figures can be volatile and are not a guarantee of actual listing
price or performance.
Is GMP a reliable predictor of listing gains?
Not always. GMP reflects sentiment among a small, unregulated group of
traders and can change rapidly right up to listing day. It has correlated
with listing performance in some IPOs and diverged significantly in others.
Treat it as one data point, not a guarantee.
What do QIB, NII, and Retail mean in subscription data?
These are investor categories used when allocating IPO shares: QIB
(Qualified Institutional Buyers, e.g. mutual funds, banks), NII (Non
Institutional Investors, typically high-net-worth individuals bidding above
₹2 lakh), and Retail (individual investors bidding up to ₹2 lakh). Each
category has a reserved portion of the total issue, and "subscription" shows
how many times that portion has been bid for.
What does "subscribed 2.5x" mean?
It means the number of shares bid for in that category is 2.5 times the
number of shares actually reserved for it - i.e. demand is 2.5 times the
available supply in that category.
Allotment & Listing
How do I check my IPO allotment status?
Visit the registrar's allotment status page, linked on each IPO's detail
page under the Allotment tab, and enter your PAN, application number, or
DP/Client ID as requested.
What happens if I don't get an allotment?
If your application isn't allotted shares, the blocked amount is released
back to your bank account (via ASBA) around the refund initiation date shown
on the IPO's detail page - no separate refund request is needed.
What is "listing gain"?
Listing gain is the percentage difference between the IPO's issue price and
its price at market open on listing day. A positive listing gain means the
stock listed above the issue price; a negative one means it listed below.
